Tahiti

Papeete is the capital of Tahiti and where our ship docked last night.  We spent the day walking Papeete which seems old and worn but still vibrant and friendly.  Our first stop was the public market.

Here, we found an array of tropical fruit, and flowers.  The most popular vegetables are taro and breadfruit.  The market included many vendors selling arts, crafts, clothing and souvenirs along with small food vendors including one where we bought coconut milk to drink with the variety of bananas we purchased.  Coconut milk is a thick, creamy emulsion made from grated coconut flesh and water while coconut water is the liquid found inside young coconuts.

Next, we toured an interesting black pearl museum.  The Tahitian black pearls have been harvested for centuries and used as medicine as well as jewelry in the distant past.

Our lunch was at a local Polynesian restaurant called Maru Maru.  The food was delicious.  They served a most unusual carpaccio oyster dish that was amazing.  When the oyster is shucked, it is about the same diameter as a pancake, was marinated in lemon, sliced nearly thin as paper and served with diced tomatoes and coconut milk.

Shopping in Papeete in the afternoon.  We walked back to the same restaurant for dinner with friends and photographed another charming island sunset.
