Rim of the World


 Treetop Estates is perched on the rim of a an ancient volcano with the fertile crater valley below us.  We have a private cabin with this view from our back patio.


We hoped we might see a hobbit as we walked this path to the lodge this morning for breakfast.

            After breakfast, I went foraging with Ticki, one of the assistant chefs in the kitchen.


We foraged Karamu berries which were added to the beet salad served at lunch.



After lunch, we drove to Wai-o-Tapu, a secluded geothermal reserve.  With its bubbling mud pools, geysers and vibrant colored hot pools, it reminded us of Yellowstone National Park.

Tonight, we will walk to these falls to see glow worms.

    Culinary memories - Nelson Bay scallops and green lipped mussels were two of our food favorites and I could not eat enough passion fruit gelato. No surprise that we would recommend the Pinot Noirs and Sauvignon Blancs from both the north and south islands. Enjoy!

      When you are at sea at night and far from any light pollution, is the Milky Way even more spectacular than we can imagine?

      Tasmanian scallops were delicious tonight at Hunger Monger in Napier. We couldn't find passion fruit gelato ..You are absolutely correct about the Pinot and Sauv Blanc. Only two wineries were on our agenda. We enjoyed dinner and good wine at Mission Winery.The ship lights are often on at night on the top deck and we retire early. We did see the Milky Way magnified when we were in South Africa. It looked close enough to touch.

      Dinner last night at Marigold. A beautiful space, interesting food and competent friendly service. Beef tartare starter was delicious and extra points for presentation, served in a bone. Have a photo to share, but don't know how to attach to this message. Prime rib and trout for the mains. Sorry Ruth Ann, we did not order dessert. Definitely a future dining spot for the four of us.

      Yes, bit of a disappointment. They become more plentiful later at night. Good though, if you listen to Glow Worm by the Mills Brothers.

Devil's Island

 This was a French penal colony for 100 years until 1953, where convicts went to die of disease or harsh conditions as 75% died within their first year.  We have each seen prison cells (from the outside of the cell!) so we will not tender to this 35 acre island. My most recent post worried our family that we are not enjoying our journey.  Quite the contrary, we are walking an hour every morning and working out at the fitness center 3 times per week.  We have danced, played scrabble, dined with other couples and we have each finished a book.  Our travel consultant gave us good suggestions for future excursions.  I believe it is important to not only record the positive experiences but to also write about the unfavorable accounts, as well.  I tried to add a bit of humor to make them more pleasant to read and recollect.   “Travel isn’t always pretty. Food and Wine

 One more day before we reach our first port in Roseau, Dominica.  These days at sea have allowed us to organize our stateroom, read and relax.  The meal offerings are rated the best in the sea cruise industry.  After gorging the first day, we have settled into our usual routine of light breakfast and lunch followed by a moderate dinner with the weekends allowing more caloric intake.  The food is a culinary delight and good wine flows freely on our all inclusive cruise along with good beverages for those who choose to remain sober.  This reminds me of our granddaughter, Caroline.  Shortly before our departure, we were viewing photographs on my phone when she looked at a photo of me and said, "No offense Grandpa, but you look plump".  I replied, "I exercise regularly and try my best not to get fat but there is so much good food and wine".  Old Soul Caroline ended the exchange with "A Life Well Lived".  I write this story with the utmost r...
