French Polynesia

Fakarava was our first island visit in French Polynesia.  It is what one would most likely picture in the mind's eye as a bucolic island paradise.  The ocean water is clear with several shades of blue.  Fakarava has a protected coral reef and is one of the best diving locations in the world with fully protected friendly sharks swimming alongside divers.  The largest concentration of grey reef sharks in the world inhabit these waters.  We went swimming up to our ankles.

Fakarava's population is about 1600.  It is 37 miles long and where we ate lunch, the island was less than a mile wide.  Black pearl farming and tourism fuel the economy.  Our lunch consisted of fresh ceviche with a local beer for me and Coca Cola for Ruth Ann.  An onboard entertainer sang a song in which the last line of the chorus is, "Wherever you go around the world, Coca Cola always tastes the same".

There seem to be drummers wherever we go.
