Mutiny On the Bounty

Pitcairn Island is shown above.  This island is where, in 1790, the mutineers of the HMS Bounty took refuge and burned their ship while casting Captain Bligh and his loyalists out to sea in a small boat.

There are currently forty inhabitants on the island.  They are casting about for young people to relocate to Pitcairn to revive their aging population.  Solar power is their source of energy.  We were unable to tender to the island so the captain brought several islanders aboard to speak about their environment and to set up a small market to sell their local wares.

We're sloshing our way to French Polynesia and will make several island stops beginning Sunday.

Song lyrics I have shared with you have all been about love between two people.  Letting You Go by Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires speaks to the love of a parent for their child.  This is for Marji and Justin.  Here are a few of the lines;

The nurse helped us buckle the seat in the car
And they sent us on our way, I drove home so slow
We had no instructions, the first days were hard
But there's things about babies a woman just knows

Three in the morning I lay my hand over
Your heart just to know you were safe in your sleep
When you started walking I fight back the urge
To stay right there beside you, keep you on your feet

And now you've decided to be someone's wife
And we'll walk down the aisle and I'll give you away
I wish I could walk with him back through your life
To see every last minute of every last day

To hear your first words and to feel your first heartbreak
To sing you to sleep when you're scared of the dark
The best I can do is to let myself trust that you know
Who'll be strong enough to carry your heart

[Chorus]
Being your daddy comes natural
The roses just know how to grow
It's easy to see that you'll get where you're going
The hard part is letting you go
The hard part is letting you go

  2. Randy/Ruth Ann, We have all been following every word, and I must compliment you on your ability to communicate a true sense of place as well as your feelings for one another. Equally joyful is looking in on your world of caring, entertaining family and friends. I love the poetry and the music references, along with the short takes that summarize so beautifully what you are seeing and experiencing. But most of all, after forty years of doing what I do for a living, I marveled at your incredibly sensitive recognition that large numbers of the crew would love experiencing local bananas of numerous color tints and tastes.

This is your long-awaited journey - but in a very real sense your notes have also made it ours.

Angela and our entire Team are following your progress and your words.

Thank you for your kind words. It is my desire to accomplish in my blog just what you have described. Also, thanks to you and your staff for guiding us to and through this fantastic voyage.
