City of Music
Today we docked in Salvador-the capital of Brahia, Brazil. The City of Music comes alive at night with a wide variety of live bands and rhythms. We visited during the day so we did not see any bands but percussive pulse was strong with drums.Nearly half of the inhabitants of cities we have visited are multiracial with a mix of mostly Native Brazilians, Africans and Europeans (Portuguese). Salvador has over 50 miles of public beaches and an Afro Brazilian culture in this city of 2.4 million people. We're both a bit under the weather which prohibited a formal tour. We walked to Pelourinho which is a World Heritage site of colorful colonial buildings and cobblestone streets. One street is dedicated to fabric stores with sewing and stitching visible through the windowless openings.
- “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.” – Mark Twain
Are you and your new drums the entertainment tonight for dinner? Very colorful , how many did you ship home?
ReplyDeleteIn years gone by, I have bought many percussion instruments during our travels. I donated my collection to the Kennedy Heights Arts Center High School Jazz Band last year so no more drums for me. (Except for my two drum kits I play in Blue Tip.)
DeleteHow timely this Mark Twain quote is. Brazil looks and sounds incredible. Missing you here! Seems like you should just be getting back from a more typical vacation… 👀
ReplyDeleteOne's ethnic or religious origin seems to matter not in Brazil. We are all Human.
Delete“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” – Maya Angelou
Favorite quote so far. I love following this journey. Hope you both started feeling better quickly.
